It's an old custom to have a seperate fruitcake at the wedding. reception. The cake was cut up and packaged in small boxes or wrapped in white paper. Placed by the door the for departing guest to take home. It was said that if the single female guest slept with the boxed cake under her pillow she would dream of her future husband-hence "groom's cake". Later in the South the cake became a chocolate cake and is served the guest that prefer chocolate. Today a Groom's Cake, if served, is often served at the rehearsal dinner for a desert or in addition to the bridal cake at the reception. It can be any flavor from chocolate to carrot cake, cheesecake etc... and is usually decorated in a humorous theme favored by the groom.
